Art I Syllabus and Supplies
Course Objectives
1. Perception—Students will illustrate ideas for artworks from direct observation, experiences, imagination; and compare and contrast the use of art elements (color, texture, form, line, space, value) and art principles (emphasis, pattern, rhythm, balance, proportion, unity) in personal artworks and those of others, using vocabulary accurately.
2. Creative expression/performance—Students will create visual solutions by elaborating on direct observation, experiences, and imagination; create designs for practical applications; and demonstrate effective use of art media and tools in design, drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.
3. Historical/cultural heritage—Students will compare and contrast historical and contemporary styles, identifying general themes and trends; describe general characteristics in artworks from a variety of cultures; and compare and contrast career and avocational opportunities in art.
4. Response/evaluation—Students will interpret, evaluate, and justify artistic decisions in personal artworks; and select and analyze original artworks, portfolios, and exhibitions by peers and others to form precise conclusions about formal qualities, historical and cultural contexts, intents and meanings.
Required Materials
Asel Art Kit $30
Students are provided with a locked cabinet in order to store their supplies at school. Make sure that the student’s name is on every piece, including each pencil and paintbrush. If you have any questions or are having trouble getting any of the supplies feel free to call me so that I can make arrangements.
Student Evaluation
Grades will be assigned each six weeks in the following way:
Daily Grades (40%)
6 Sketchbook journal grades (due by Friday each week)
6 Daily Participation Grades
Small projects that take less than 2 days
Major Grades (60%)
There are 1-4 major projects per six weeks. These projects take more than 4 days
to complete. Major grades could also include Art History or Movie quizzes.
Sketchbook Journals
Each week a journal prompt will be put on the chalk board. Students will read the prompt and then respond by drawing in their journals.
Journals are to be kept all year. Class notes should also be taken in the journal.
Daily Participation Grades
Students will be awarded a 100 for a daily grade each week for participating in class. 20 points will be ducted for each day that the
student fails participate and follow art room rules. Some reasons that a student could lose points: (1) Working on homework for
another class (2) Not working on their art project (3) Failing to clean up properly or take care of classroom materials (4) Breaking
any classroom or school rule

In the past we gave out a list of supplies for students to purchase on their own. This year to save everyone money and time, we purchased the supplies ahead of time, so that students can purchase the supplies directly from us at a huge discount.
