Art II Syllabus and Supplies
Course Objectives
1. Perception—Students will interpret visual parallels between the structures of natural and human-made environments; and compare suitability of art materials and processes to express specific ideas relating to visual themes, using precise art vocabulary.
2. Creative expression/performance—Students will formulate multiple solutions to expand personal themes that demonstrate intent; apply design skills in creating practical applications, clarifying presentations, and defining choices made by consumers; and select from a variety of art media and tools to communicate specific ideas in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, fiberart, jewelry, photography/filmmaking, and electronic media-generated art.
3. Historical/cultural heritage—Students will study a selected historical period or style of art; analyze specific characteristics of artworks in various cultures; and select and research career and avocational choices in art.
4. Response/evaluation—Students will select and critique artworks in progress, making decisions about future directions in personal work; and select and critique original artworks, portfolios, and exhibitions by peers or others.
Required Materials
Asel Art Kit $45
Students are provided with a locked cabinet in order to store their supplies at school. Make sure that the student’s name is on every piece, including each pencil and paintbrush. If you have any questions or are having trouble getting any of the supplies feel free to call me so that I can make arrangements.
Student Evaluation
Grades will be assigned each six weeks in the following way:
Daily Grades (40%)
6 Journal grades (due by Friday each week)
Major Grades (60%)
Art 3 students are required to complete 3 major projects per six weeks. Two of these projects will be assigned by
the teacher, the other is chosen by the student in their medium.
Sketchbook Journals
Each week journal prompts will be put on the white board. Students will read the prompts and then respond by drawing in their journals. Journals are to be kept all year. Class notes should also be taken in the journal.
Daily Participation Grades
Students will be awarded a 100 for a daily grade each week for participating in class. 20 points will be ducted for each day that the student fails participate and follow art room rules. Some reasons that a student could lose points: (1) Working on homework for another class (2) Not working on their art project (3) Failing to clean up properly or take care of classroom materials (4) Breaking any classroom or school rule

Art III Sketchbook Journal Prompts
1st Six Weeks
1. Mmmmm Bop. Choose your own 'bop' (repertoire of music), analyze the colors and images that come to mind while listening to it. Create a composition that reflects that music choice. Survey 5 random people. Allow them to write in your sketchbook what comes to mind when they see your spread.
2. Draw your hand holding an object. Reflect on that object. Show its symbolism, meaning, etc.
3. Portray a sense of deviousness with a field of roses and a kung-fu fight.
4. Capture a sense of calm with blue colors. Theme: raindrops and cats wearing clothes.
5. The theme of this corpse-cold moon, while incorporating mist coiling through a wood and sailboats.
6. Show a sassy servant, and swords. The piece should not contain any sort of rusted but functional machinery.
2nd Six Weeks
7. Try to create a sense of reluctance with a vampire in a leaning pose.
8. Your theme is: perfume. Depict any emotion or quality except urgency.
10. Record a recent dream. Include text describing the dream.
11. There is a LOT going on in the world right now. Pick a topic and address it.
12. Create a realistic portrait of a cartoon character. Prompt: love and loss.
13. Try to create a sense of reluctance with a vampire in a leaning pose.
3rd Six Weeks
14. This picture depicts a haggard woman and an elf and either mirrors or the texture of leather. Prompt: illusion.
15. Your picture is set in a carnival during winter and involves two of these three elements: a black leather trenchcoat, elaborate clothing that means things, or synchronized swimming.
16. Show a woman with long nails, and a band of rebels. The piece should not contain any sort of chivalry.
17. Capture a sense of sin with achromatic colors. Theme: eternal connection.
18. Prepare a piece in a folk art style. Using green colors, evoke a sense of worry and place the subject in a dark alley.
19. Prepare a piece in a mannerist style. Using dark colors, evoke a sense of hope and place the subject in the Barbary Coast.
4th Six Weeks
20. Winter, snow, ice. Draw the winter landscape around you.
Add cut-outs from a magazine, newspaper, or photo -OR- add pop-up elements for 3-dimensional effects.
21. Prepare a piece in a mannerist style. Using dark colors, evoke a sense of hope and place the subject in the Barbary Coast.
22. Prepare a piece in a mannerist style. Using dark colors, evoke a sense of hope and place the subject in the Barbary Coast.
23. Show a priestess, and hugging. Theme: burning bright. It should contain a bald head or Chia pet, and use primarily neutral colors.
24. Using a predominantly complementary color scheme, show a character in a mood of nervousness. Experiment with the amount, angle, harshness, origin, source, or color of the lighting.
25. Using a predominantly purple color scheme, show a bishounen (beautiful boy) in a mood of rejection. Listen to a style of music that you usually don't listen to while creating.
